It is an acidic oxide and anhydride of silicic acid. The chemical properties are very stable. It is insoluble in water and does not react with water, and does not work with common acids. It can react with hydrogen fluoride gas or hydrofluoric acid to generate silicon tetrafluoride gas.

It has other common properties of acidic oxides, and can react with alkali (strong alkali solution or molten alkali) to produce salt and water at high temperature.
